Foot Stretches for Runners

In order to help strengthen your feet and prevent getting an injury, it’s recommended that you incorporate foot stretches in your daily routine. Performing these light exercises during your warmup before a run may help keep your feet flexible, and better prepare them for the activity. One type of exercise you can practice is the big toe extension lunge. To perform this, start by standing inside a door frame and leaning your big toe against the wall angled upward. You will begin to feel a stretch in your big toe once you begin to lunge forward. Another type of foot stretch you can practice is done by rolling either a lacrosse ball or massage ball back and forth under the arch of your foot. This kind of stretch is particularly useful after a run, as it helps to relax the muscles underneath your foot. Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

How to Best Treat a Toenail Infection

Nail fungus, typically picked up from not wearing the proper footwear in communal showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools, is contagious and can lead to a great deal of pain if left untreated. When the fungus gets under the nail, it will likely cause the toenail to thicken, harden, and become discolored. The nail may also become brittle and fall off. Those with diabetes, circulatory issues, or an immune deficiency are more likely to develop a toenail fungus infection. Your chances of getting an infection may also increase with age. As far as treating the infection, we recommend you see a podiatrist as soon as possible for a physical exam, as well as to get a sample of your nail tested to determine if the infection truly is fungal.  Once diagnosed, a podiatrist may suggest oral treatments, topical treatments, laser treatments, or for more severe cases, surgical treatments. Signs You May Have Developed Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a condition that affects the feet, specifically causing them to lose feeling. This can be incredibly dangerous, especially if you have developed a serious foot condition and can not feel the symptoms of it. Neuropathy may also alter the shape of your foot. What Is Neuropathy?

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness

  • Prickling and tingling sensations

Types of Heel Pain

Heel pain is experienced by many patients as a gradual occurrence. It may develop as a result of repetitive stress the heel endures, which can come from frequently running or standing for the majority of the day. A common type of heel pain is referred to as plantar fasciitis, and this affects the portion of tissue that is located on the bottom of the foot. When children have heel pain, it may be indicative of Sever’s disease, which targets the heel plate of growing teenagers. The condition that is known as Achilles tendinosis can happen from sudden movements, and can affect the heel and the bottom of the calf muscles. Causes of Heel Pain
